How to pleach a michelia hedge

At EPIC Landscape Design, we believe in crafting outdoor spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and reflective of your style. One of the timeless elements we often incorporate into our designs is the pleached hedge — a sophisticated feature that offers privacy, structure and seasonal interest. Stepping into our show garden, we’ve created a guide to trimming and training a pleached Michelia hedge.

What is a pleached hedge?

A pleached hedge is a “hedge on sticks”. Pleaching involves training trees to form a flat, connected screen above a clear stem. It's an elegant solution for creating privacy without sacrificing space, ideal for urban gardens in Christchurch and beyond. Want to block out your neighbours? This is the perfect solution!

Tools you'll need:

Sharp secateurs.
Pruning saw (for thicker branches).
Hedge shears.
Ladder (for taller hedges) – we strongly advise you ask someone to hold the ladder whilst you are using it.
Gloves and eye protection.

How to grow and shape your pleached hedge

Please note: this guidance is based on Michelia, but can be transferred to other plant varieties. Get in touch if you’d prefer a 1:1 on-site consultation.

Initial training

Once your Michelia has been planted, let it grow (image below of young trees planted).

Once the new growth reaches 200-300mm, pinch off the tips (the most recent growth, see example images below) using your fingers. By pinching off the growth tips, this will encourage new growth further down the stem, creating a nice dense bushy plant.

ESSENTIAL: make sure when tipping growth that you leave the central leader alone (the tallest stem) as this will ensure the plant keeps growing vertically.

Repeat this process several times over the growing season (spring to autumn) and potentially the following growing season. Image below shows young Michelia after pinching.

Trim off lower branches as required to start getting the bottom of the pleach growth in the correct position. Normally one layer of branches per year will keep the ratio of trunk to head correct.

After the initial tipping of the growth tips, you should have a nice and dense bushy tear dropped shaped tree (see example below).

Secondary training

Using your hedge shearers, trim the front and rear face of the trees to start creating the flat face of the pleached hedge. This will encourage the trees to start growing sideways.

Continue tipping the new growth on the sides so you continue creating a good dense pleach (see image outline below).

Once the desired height of your hedge is reached, it’s time to trim the central leader. This will further encourage more horizontal growth, filling the gap between the trees. See images below (the right image displays a flowering hedge during spring).

Final training

You’re almost there! After secondary training, your pleached hedge should be touching and you should have created a good visual screen.

With your cleaned and sharpened hedge shearers, trim your pleached Michelia twice a year to maintain a great and dense form. We recommend you trim your Michelia pleached hedge on either side of Labour weekend, or after flowering. This trim aims to tidy up the vigorous spring growth.

The next annual prune should be around Waitangi weekend. This will tidy up the summer growth and ensure your hedge looks good over autumn and winter.

ESSENTIAL: Ensure you trim your pleached hedge by early February, otherwise you will remove the flower buds for the following spring (see example before, during and after images below).

Maintenance advice

Maintain the base and trunk

Regularly remove suckers or unwanted growth from the base. Monitor for pests or diseases, especially in tightly interwoven branches, and keep the lower trunk clear to preserve the pleached appearance.

Regular trimming and pruning

Continue training and pruning each year to maintain the form and prevent overcrowding. Trim back soft growth, keeping the front and back vertical and the top flat. Remove any growth on the trunk below the pleached frame and cut back to 2–3 buds from the main structure to maintain density.

Feed regularly

Michelia are heavy feeders, especially during their prolific flowering period. We recommend fertilising them three times a year with a high iron fertiliser. Aim to feed in late winter to early spring, around Christmas and again in mid-autumn.

Tips for success

Select and plant appropriate trees: choose specimens that are suitable for pleaching. Ensure the branching is balanced and the trunk is straight. Plant them in a straight line, spacing them approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart, or as specified in a planting plan (which we can design).

Begin training young: young branches are more pliable and easier to shape.

Interweave or espalier the branches: depending on your design preference, either interweave the young, flexible branches between trees to create a solid screen, or train branches horizontally in an espalier pattern along the support structure.

Ensure newly planted trees are well-watered until established.

Avoid over-pruning in the initial years; focus on shaping and training.

Consistency is key; pleached trees require annual maintenance to retain their form.

Why create a landscape plan?

The most relatable scenario to explain why a landscape plan is important is this: would you build a house without a house plan? A house plan is an essential part of building a house. It forms the design of your future house, includes all elements required for a builder to construct your house, and the design you choose is created within your build budget.

Now let’s think about your landscape project. Whether you’re constructing a new project, or renovating your existing backyard, creating your outdoor living areas can be an expensive project to get wrong.

So why start without a plan?

You need to consider hard surfaces such as concrete, paving and decks. Perhaps you want to include a spa, an area for the kids to play, or for your utility area to be out of sight. You may have a budget in mind and will likely start by contacting landscape construction companies to get pricing – but how do they know what to quote, where to start and how long it’s going to take?

These are all reasons why you need a landscape plan. So, what are the risks of not having a plan?

Without a plan, costs can get blown out pretty quickly and you soon realise that you can’t afford to finish what you started.
Areas become unusable (e.g. the deck is too small, trees and plants grow too large).
Materials to use haven’t been considered – decorative concrete or paving? Kwila or pine? What are the pros and cons of each material?
You want to keep some plants or trees, so how do you know what to build around them and where to start?
Choosing plants and trees – what is going to work in your soil and climate? How big are they going to grow? Are they easy care?
Watering – have you considered the benefits of installing an automatic irrigation system for your gardens, saving time and money?
Different areas of the landscape don’t flow together (imagine yourself walking through your new landscape and using each area – does it connect?).
Landscape features may block views from your house.

When you create a landscape plan you:

design the project right from the start and with the whole budget in mind.
get the entire area measured and scoped and you can see what the final result is going to be before you get started on the construction and planting.
can stage each area and work towards your final budget over time.
get the landscape project quoted and have a clear understanding of costs before you build.
consider existing gardens that you may want to keep that will form part of the design and ensure that anything new will work with these (e.g. new design elements such as concrete, paving, decks, new gardens).

Trees and shrubs for autumn colour

Gardens are an important feature of any home, but many homeowners fall into the trap of concentrating on spring and summer flowering plants and shrubs to bring them joy. A well-planned garden should give you year-round satisfaction, and autumn is a season to enjoy a blaze of spectacular colours.

Now is the time that you need to start planning your landscape design to introduce trees and shrubs for autumn colour. The Christchurch and Canterbury climate does not suit all types of trees and shrubs, so it’s important that you take advice before getting busy buying and planting.

Here’s a selection of some easy to grow trees and shrubs that can brighten your autumn garden. These are just a few of the hundreds available, and we can talk about your many options during an EPIC landscape consultation .

Fiery reds

Acers are a firm favourite to ignite autumn colours, no matter how modest or large the size of the garden. The Acer rubrum ‘Autumn Glory’ is a compact tree that grows upright making it an ideal choice in suburban landscape designs; its leaves go through the spectrum – orange, red to crimson.

Cornus alba sibirica, or red barked dogwood, as it is known by its common name, is a deciduous fast-growing shrub that produces attractive small, creamy flowers. It has dark green oval leaves, but it is in autumn that its real beauty is revealed. When the leaves are dropped, its bright red stems are exposed and can add a real contrast to the other plants you have in your landscape design.

Glorious golds and yellows

Gingko biloba ‘Autumn Gold’ is a deciduous tree that adds visual interest to your garden. With a symmetrical crown, its canopy of delicate fan-shaped leaves turns the most brilliant of yellows in autumn. Plus, this tree tolerates extremes of temperature and once established is drought tolerant too – a great hardy specimen.

There’s very little not to love about the Citrus Lemon ‘Meyer’ which it can be popular in a landscape design. Admittedly, the leaves aren’t yellow, but this compact evergreen shrub produces masses of lemon fruit from its fragrant flowers in time for autumn harvest.

Deep purples and pastels

Cercis canadensis, or Forest Pansy, is considered a large deciduous shrub, or a small ornamental tree – depending on who you talk to – but it’s mainly grown for its foliage. In spring, small pink flowers emerge from the bare branches, and when in leaf (spring and summer) it has heart-shaped deep red-purple leaves. In autumn these leaves turn into a range of vibrant, pastel hues of peach, apricot and orange which makes the Forest Pansy a celebrated addition to a garden at any time of the year.

Hebe 'Autumn Glory' is a native small, rounded, evergreen shrub, and as the name suggests, it holds onto its spikes of purple flowers well into autumn. There are so many cultivated varieties of Hebe that you are spoiled for choice with colour.

As a rule of thumb, the trees and shrubs that have such dramatic changes of colour in autumn still need to be able to get a good dose of sunlight. When you choose where to plant them, the condition of the soil is also critical to their ability to thrive.

Drought tolerant gardening is the process of landscaping or gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation.

It is promoted in regions that do not have accessible, plentiful, or reliable supplies of fresh water and is gaining acceptance in other regions as access to irrigation water is becoming limited.

Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasised, and care is taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and run off.

The specific plants used in drought tolerant gardening depend upon the climate. Drought tolerant landscaping is different from natural landscaping because the emphasis is on selection of plants for water conservation, not necessarily selecting native plants.

With recreation time at a premium, and a growing global concern for the supply of water, savvy gardeners and designers are adopting drought tolerant principles into every part of their landscape design. Until recently, drought tolerant plants and designs have most commonly been a feature around commercial sites, roundabouts and traffic islands. As water conservation awareness grows, drought tolerant landscape design is catching on – particularly in regions like Central Otago, Canterbury and wind windswept coastal areas of New Zealand.

The trick to drought tolerance is choosing a landscape designer who can select plant species that are appropriate for your climate. Natives are an obvious choice, as they naturally grow in the local conditions, however, introducing exotic species into the design can achieve stunning looking gardens.

A mix of native and exotic species will provide great contrast of colours and textures creating a more visually attractive design with more seasonal interest.

A drought tolerant landscape design does not have to be comprised exclusively of natives or drought tolerant plants. By ‘hydro zoning’ or grouping plants with similar water needs together in your landscape design, your drought tolerant design can accommodate a range of plant options to achieve an overall look.

Plants that require more water are placed in a shady spot or closer to a water source. With careful planning, contouring and understanding of natural drainage patterns, the landscape itself can be used to fully guide water to areas of the garden where it will be most beneficial. Terracing can stem soil erosion, while mounds and berms at the edges of the garden will help redirect water flow back into the garden.

If your landscape design requires the use of impermeable materials like solid concrete pathways, then shape them to direct surface water back into planted areas. In a true drought tolerant landscape, more porous paving options like gravel, flagstones and pavers are not only preferable, they also provide natural looking, sculptural elements and tonal options.

Tips and tricks to drought proof your landscape

Mulch – gravel or stones, bark, compost

If you do water your garden over summer, ensure the soil has a good covering of mulch. Ideally, mulching can wait until Autumn when the garden is cut back as bare earth loses water quickly, so it’s best to keep it covered.

• A thick layer of mulch keeps the moisture in and weeds out. Mulch should be at least 6cm thick and applied twice a year.

Water

• Good regular deep watering (long periods of time, once or twice a week) is more beneficial to the garden than short shallow watering’s (20 minutes or less every day).

• Ensure water is being applied to the soil and not blown away by wind. Dripline installed under mulch is the best option.

Shelter

• Where possible, provide wind protection to the garden as this will minimise water loss from the soil.

Design

• Seek the advice of an expert to redesign your landscape to maximise the visual effect of your landscape, as well as minimising water requirements.

Being a landscape designer is hugely satisfying...

One of the most satisfying experiences we commonly come across is dealing with clients who admit they are not green-thumbed, however, by the end of the design and construction process, they have become inspired to learn how to maintain their new landscape to be the best it can be.

But what should you have in the tool shed?

It’s easy to go overboard when purchasing gardening tools and it can be overwhelming to walk into a hardware shop and know what to buy. So, to give you an idea of the essential ‘tools’ you need, we’ve put together a list of our top 10 essential garden tools you should look at purchasing to make your job easier.

Tools can take up a lot space and cost a lot of money, but staying focused on the basics can keep your shed or storage area from becoming overcrowded. There’s always bigger and better; but buying the best quality tools that your budget will allow, and maintaining them, can go a long way in getting the most out of your investment.

1. Gloves

While gardening can be a wonderful hobby, it can quickly turn into a thorny and splintery hassle without the right pair of gloves.

• Gloves should be durable but not too bulky.

• Fit is important, as poorly fitting gloves can cause blisters or result in accidents from slipping off.

• Fabrics that are water resistant, but also breathable, will help keep hands cool and comfortable.

2. Pruning Shears

Hand pruners, also called secateurs, help reign in plants that are getting out of control and taking over. Anvil-style pruners cut with a sharp blade meeting a flat surface, similar to a knife on a board. Bypass pruners cut with a sharp blade passing by a sharp-edged flat surface, more like scissors. Anvil pruners are best for dead wood as they can cause crush injuries to fresh, green stems and branches.

• Bypass pruners are better for live plants and green wood.

• Pruners should fit easily in the palm of your hand.

• Ratcheting pruners provide increased cutting strength, perfect for anyone with reduced hand strength or arthritis.

• For cleaner cuts and less injury to plants, pruners should be sharpened regularly.

A quality pair of secateurs will be one of the best investments you will make. We highly recommend you buy the best your budget will allow as they will last longer and provide a better cut which will lead to better plant health.

3. Loppers

Another cutting tool, loppers are basically long-handled pruners used to trim hard to reach areas and cut thicker branches. The long handles provide the leverage it takes to cut through branches up to two cm’s or more in diameter. There is both anvil and bypass types, just like pruners. Handles generally range from 40-90 cm’s.

• Bypass loppers are more precise in the cut location than anvil style.

• Longer handled loppers can be heavy. Know what you’ll be cutting and how far you’ll need to reach and get the appropriate length.

• Lightweight aluminium or carbon-composite handles can be lighter.

• Like pruners, keep lopper blades in good condition and sharpen regularly.

4. Garden Fork

An efficient tool for turning soil, garden forks can dig into dense soil better than a spade.

• Forks with a slight curve to the spines are useful for scooping mulch or turning compost piles, much like a pitchfork.

• Straight tines are better for digging; great for compacted, rocky, or clay soil.

• Square tines are stronger than flat tines which can bend when they hit a rock or root.

5. Hedge trimmer

Hedges commonly form the backbone of the garden, and when trimmed regularly, they provide a great low maintenance solution for layering and garden definition.

Whilst electric or petrol-powered trimmers are available, using hand shears while the hedge is establishing is the best answer.

• Cost effective over mechanical options.

• Provide better control for precise trimming of topiary or immature hedges.

• Trimmer should be light but strong and easy to use.

• For cleaner cuts and less injury to plants, pruners should be sharpened regularly.

6. Spade

These short-handled square spades are garden workhorses. They make easy work of digging holes for plants, edging, lifting turf, and moving small mounds of dirt from one area to another. This tool can be more on the pricey side, but a good spade will last you the rest of your gardening life.

• Treads on top of the blade give a sturdier and more comfortable foot surface when needing an extra push.

• Hardwood handles are durable and absorb shock and vibration.

• Generally available with long or short handles. Longer handles provide more leverage but are heavier.

• Stainless steel heads are strong and won’t rust.

7. Leaf Rake

When leaves and debris fall, your sturdy rake is there to whisk them away. Rakes come in a wide variety of styles and sizes, but a great starter is a standard leaf rake.

• Adjustable rakes do the job of more than one tool, reaching into narrow areas or gathering large piles of leaves.

• Steel tines are stronger and may be rougher on delicate lawns than plastic tines.

8. Hoe

Your type of garden will dictate what type of hoe is best for you. For typical garden maintenance and weed control, a sharp torpedo hoe is best; although a veggie garden may require a sturdy, wide hoe.

If you have perennial gardens, a more delicate touch and a thinner hoe may be required. Hoes are useful in preparing garden and flower beds and cutting down weeds.

• Look for a comfortable handle with a long reach.

• A sharp blade works better and is easier to use.

9. Garden Hose with Adjustable Nozzle

Water is the foundation of your garden’s life and it’s important that your garden hose can reach and spray every area. We highly recommend you purchase a quality hose which is kink and knot resistant as there is nothing more frustrating than a kinked hose. An adjustable nozzle puts you in control of the water pressure and spray radius.

• Estimate the amount of length you will need with your hose before buying one.

• Hose length will affect water pressure – the longer the hose, the lower the resulting pressure.

• Vinyl hoses are lighter weight and less expensive, but kink easier and don’t last as long as rubber construction.

• Store your hoses coiled up and out of direct sunlight. Storing with kinks in them can result in weak spots.

10. Watering Wand

Give your plants a gentle rain shower with a water-breaking wand. The extended reach is also helpful to get to out-of-the-way containers, hanging plants, or the back edges of borders. Watering wands come in a variety of lengths.

• Choose an appropriate length for your needs – longer for high hanging baskets; shorter for tighter spaces.

• Built-in shut off valves in the handle conserve water and allow you to adjust the flow.

Ligularia Reniformis - Tractor Seat Plant. Maintenance Guide

Have your tractor seats gone from lush to mush?

As a landscape designer in Christchurch, Ligularia reniformis is one our our favorite plants to use as it provides stunning colour and texture to the garden. It does have one draw back which is winter but Don’t panic its totally normal for your tractor seat plants to suffer a little over winter. The frost is what has caused the damage and your plants will naturally grow back in the springtime. In their native environment these plants are winter dormant. The Christchurch climate is borderline for them and dependent on their placement at your property they will either hibernate over winter if they get frosted or too cold, if they are protected they will continue to look great all year round.

If your tractor seats do get frosted its best to leave the burnt foliage on for as long as you can bear looking at it as it will provide some protection to the plant for the remainder of winter. In springtime cut the damaged foliage back to ground level and you will soon see the new growth starting to appear. Once you have cut the damaged foliage off we recommend applying a good 12 month slow release fertiliser and a child and pet friendly slug bait to reduce any damage which may occur.

Why irrigation is an important component to your landscape design

With the arrival of spring, many people are starting to get their gardens and outdoor spaces ready for summer. The influx of warmer weather and a dry winter here in Christchurch has meant many gardens require regular irrigation to encourage growth and thrive in our drier climate. I am often asked by clients, how often should you water your gardens and lawns to achieve good growth and plant health.

General guidelines for driplines and lawns

Turn your timer on when daylight saving starts
Turn your timer off when daylight saving finishes
In times of heavy rain, while irrigation is turned on, an irrigation system may need to be manually turned off to allow the soil to drain.
Automatic irrigation is not a silver bullet and can cause just as much harm as under-watering.
Good regular deep watering (long periods of time, once or twice a week) is more beneficial to the garden than short shallow waterings (20 minutes or less every day)

I would recommend for a start that a baseline setting be used for the bulk of the irrigation, with manual cycles added when required to ensure adequate moisture be maintained in the garden areas. Over a short time, a natural pattern will emerge as to if and when manual cycles are required, and these could then be added to the automatic program, or baseline settings reduced if required.

Garden beds - recommended baseline settings

All garden beds once a week for 1 hour (estimated it could be less). If required add an additional manual cycle three to fours days later. If the additional manual cycle becomes regular add it to the program or increase watering time to 1.5 - 2 hours (estimated). If adding multiple days ensure there are at least 2-3 days between waterings.

Recommend: Digging a small hole in the garden to inspect soil moisture levels as required. Hold a handful of soil in your hand and roll it into a sausage. If it breaks up and crumbles the soil is too dry, if it makes a muddy mess on your hands it is too wet, If it rolls into a nice sausage shape it is ideal.

Lawns – recommended baseline settings

All lawns 30-45 mins one to twice a week. Please note this is dependant on weather conditions. Be aware you are only trying to keep the top 300-400mm moist.

Watering times guidelines

Set the baseline settings into the controller and set this as 100% on the seasonal adjust. In spring and autumn, the watering requirements are less than in the height of summer. Recommend using the seasonal adjust starting at 30-40% in early spring and increasing this up as the heat comes on in January. At the height of summer, the seasonal adjust may be well in excess of 100% depending on the season. As the temperatures start decreasing in autumn start reducing the seasonal adjust back down. The autumn decrease will more than likely mirror the spring settings, Please note this will be dependant on weather conditions.
